Focused on Tinitus

Solution Focused hypnotherapy, despite the cause, can help you to overcome the affects of suffering from tinnitus.

Tinnitus is very real to those that suffer from it but it’s definition comes from the Latin tinnier meaning to ring and is the perception of sound in the absence of the corresponding external noise. The noises are generated and perceived by the individual and can be triggered by many things. It is not an illness or disease in itself but a symptom. It can be due to a physical injury, exposure to loud or extended noise, temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, hearing loss of varying cause, inner ear pathologies such as Meniere’s disease, impacted ear wax and middle ear blockages, head or neck trauma, unwanted side effects of medications, or can be brought on by shock or stress.

For many it is no more than an irritation that constantly annoys. It can vary in nature, volume and even be intermittent. As a sufferer myself following a physical injury to my auditory nerve, I totally understand and can empathise with those who suffer. It is more common in the older population (over 65) and can seem worse as we retire to bed often preventing or interrupting sleep (See also insomnia). It is believed that 10-15% of the total UK population suffer with this condition.

The limbic system (part of the primitive brain) is thought to control tinnitus. As a Hypnotherapist I understand that this part of the brain is inclined to encourage repetition. What didn’t harm us yesterday must be good, so our brain drives our body to respond the same way the next day – habituation. Hypnotherapy is used to interrupt the repeating cycle and give the patient a tool to use to help to control the brain from recognising the noise in consciousness. It is always worth having a hearing test to ensure that a hearing loss is not present but even so Hypnotherapy can help you to manage the symptom.

If you have questions about how Solutions Focused Hypnotherapy can help you, we'd love to hear from you.

Focused on Nail Biting

Biting nails can originate from a stressful period long forgotten and again the processes of habituation occur. Many adults don’t remember why they bite their nails but live with disfigured finger tips that can often become sore, painful and even infected preventing normal patterns of nail growth. Children don’t recognise necessarily what has stressed them and it becomes a habit that comforts them. Some believe it has it’s roots in the comfort from suckling or thumb sucking as an infant. Habituation (described in tinnitus) plays a big part in perpetuating the activity throughout life.

Again hypnotherapy can help individuals recognise what they do and give them a tool to break the habit of nail biting and take control again. For some self control is enough but others need a little help and that is where Solution Focused Hypnotherapy comes to the rescue.

Focused on Bruxism

Bruxism is the grinding of teeth mostly during sleep. We don’t know that we are doing it most of the time. It has several causes, dental issues, temporal mandibular dysfunction (TMJ), developmental disorders and stress.

As with Tinnitus our brain steps in and  advises us that what didn’t harm us yesterday must be good to do, so our brain drives our body to respond the same way the next day/night and habituation occurs. It becomes a habit. Physical barriers can be used to protect the teeth and jaw but hypnotherapy can break the perpetual cycle.

Focused on Physical Ticks

Nervous ticks are often the result of a traumatic event causing us extreme stress. The response which may never have been experienced before can burn a pathway in the brain that becomes habit. It is like a well walked pathway in a thick wood it becomes imbedded and a habit forms again habituation. Hypnotherapy can be used to help you to control the urges and to break the cycle.Ticks may also be associated with Turrets Syndrome and the Autistic spectrum. In these circumstances it is often stressful environments or events that exacerbate the tick.

Hypnotherapy can be used to bring calm to the situation and help the client to control the response (tick).
